8/3 Topic I: The Name's Du Xiao Hua, But Call Me Steve

In the past few weeks, there has been a heated debate in PTT's studyabroad forum over whether we should have English names just to make life easier in the English speaking world. A lot of us grow up with an English name, for some, English names. They might have been given to us by teachers or parents or "borrowed" from some celebrity we so admired. Looking at our very group, some of us have "English" English names, others stick to transliteration of their Chinese names. Following is an interesting article that I found on the Internet:

In our meeting on Tuesday, I'd like to talk about 1.)why you prefer using English names to transliterated Chinese names (or reverse). 2.)has it ever occurred to you why people in the Chinese speaking world use "English" English names more often than people of other Asian cultures?
